How is it that November is going by so fast? But hey technically it’s still fall. Even though the leaves have all changed colors and have already fallen to the ground, I’m still very much in fall mode. Pumpkins spice candles, moody burgundy and mustard yellow everything…well this moodboard still sums it up for me.
For this pattern studies, I wanted to challenge myself to draw some foliage. I was leery about it because I still think to myself ‘can I really take this brush and mix it with this paint and move my hand in the certain necessary ways to make it look like an actual thing?!…and not mess up on it?!’ i.e. I guess I still doubt myself sometimes. Especially when it involves something new. Though I love the imperfect, hand drawn aesthetic of plants, my previous past pattern studies haven’t involved any botanical renderings. Why? Because I haven’t been confident enough to tackle the drawing of them. BUT this is exactly what this series is about – trying to tackle new drawings that I may not be 100% confident in. So with that said, these patterns make me smile because I actually did take the brush and the paint and my hand and make it look like something.
Moral of the story? Keep trying new things, keep testing new techniques, just keep going…even if you aren’t 100% confident. The only way to get better is to do, create, try, make mistakes and discoveries, and learn.
What about you – Do you doubt yourself sometimes? How do you keep pushing through? Tell me in the comments or on Twitter. Oh, and don’t forget to tell me which one is your fave!
